Most prominent was his cooperation with Krzysztof Kieślowski for the films of the Trois Couleurs trilogy, La double vie de Véronique and the Dekalog; Preisner was also the real composer of the music attributed to fictious eighteenth-century Dutch composer Van Den Budenmayer used in some of Kieślowski's films.
Preisner wrote music for about 50 films and won two Césars, which is not bad for a self-taught composer; he studied philosophy and history.
