What about the self-satisfaction that comes from helping someone? Is that not, by itself, a reward? In which case is the action itself just a way to gain that feeling?
I once heard that the only reason people do anything is for the fear of punishment, or the promise of a reward. And I somewhat agree ... I can't think of a contradicting example.
But rewards are internal, and dependent on perception. By helping someone out with something, the action itself can be the reward, if one so chooses it to be.
Maybe the real meaning of selflessness is to not separate one's self from the world around. If you think of others as a part of yourself, then helping them makes logical sense, whether they smile or not.
i did like to resay this: man u r good.. now that deserves a highfive! *highfives*
and i agree wether or not the smile depends on how grateful they r and it doesn't mean that u can't be proud of yourself for doing the right thing no matter how gratefull they r..
But if you think of others and your environment as part of yourself, then technically, aren't you helping yourself by helping them? This "logical sense" sounds like self-preservation.
Example, you see a homeless person on the street. If you think of them as part of yourself, then you would feel uncomfortable with their suffering, and so by helping them, aren't you really just alleiviating your discomfort?
Yeah. I suppose someone could flip the meaning around, and say that by doing everything for yourself you are some how bettering the lives of the homeless guy you saw earlier. But in any case, what if you met some poor person with some kind of incurable disease that had no effect other than to render them completely incapable of smiling, or showing appreciation? Is that hypothetical person worth helping?
Hmm. Even if the person they help show no appreciation, I think most people would get a warm cozy feeling inside, and think, "Wow, I'm such a good person, I helped someone without expecting a reward." They may not think this exactly, or as exaggeratedly, but to some extent that's what happens. What they don't realize is that the self-confidence, self-appreciation or other mental effects they recieve are also a form of reward.
Okay, so we've established that helping somebody is a good feeling, as is seeing that somebody smile. So I think it would be fair to put this in "the best feeling combo" category, because obviously this item describes two distinct feelings, making it plural, instead of singular, correct?
Okay, my point is made, and may I never bother with this item again.
I did not get a single word!!!! But when u talk about helping people to smile, I'm all over it! N if u know me then u'd know that…..........................well PEACE!!! ;p
I agree with what the thing say: " When You Help Someone and You See Him/Her Smile...where I work when you just talk to them or whatever they love that!:)

No time for that now…
ohhh this is the BEST feeling in the worlddd.
yes, a great feeling.
Oh, stop being a saint. You make me feel bad.
Helping someone should make you smile, whether they smile or not is… irrelevant.
Thanks Mother Theresa!
Helping people always gives me a warm cozy feeling inside.
Strangers with this kind of honesty make me grow a big rubbery one…
You know you made a difference when this happens…
when you feel you're the greatest shit on earth (xcuse the lg), helping sone makes your spirits rise. And its the best way to be human.
I second gb's point. Few rewards are more rewarding than not requiring one at all.
i like it when other people smile. it makes me smile!

What point?
I was just wondering that.
But I did add it under "Best Feeling Combo".

I wasn't aware of my insanity.
But I suppose if you were aware of your insanity, or began to question it, you'd have to have some sort of sanity.
Wasn't that the moral of Proof? :D
