I think it should still be a planet, but scientists discovered an object in the Kuiper Belt (where Pluto is) a few years ago that's actually bigger than Pluto is. It's called Eris. It's considered a dwarf planet, and since it's bigger than Pluto, scientists figured Pluto should be a dwarf planet too.

You're right gbman. Poor Plutonians...I wouldn't be surprised if they attacked Earth

Everyone wants revenge. Those astronomers has never done anything usefull anyway. Those wankers.;)

Before 2006 there was no formal definition of a planet. After years of debatte the definition was build alongside the theories of planet formation: A planet is a celestial body that is (1) in orbit around the Sun, (2) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (3) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit. Pluto fails in (3). Well, too bad.

those stupid astronomers r crazy! whoever made those restrictions obviously didnt kno wat an impact de-planeting pluto would hve  haha

I want to make it abundantly clear that I think Pluto should be a planet. But if you think about it, at least the mnemonic that I heard "Man very early made jars stand up neatly please" does sound better w/out the please at the end. I'm sure there is a better one that is not diminished by the elimination of Pluto from science books.

I can't wait for the movie: "Pluto Attacks!"

Pluto deserved to be demoted! Being a planet brings not only glory but duties, one being to keep your orbit tidy. If Pluto decides to be lazy and sleazy, well, bear the consequences I'd say. There is no place in this solar system for such a  slacker.

Pluto should be a planet!! once given the title of planet it should stay,, ur excuse is like sayin well u were a human but then u got lazy so now ur an ape! it doesnt work

Those schools need to update their science textbooks now. They're expired because of our poor Pluto's removal Frown
Silthilar
Silthilar posted over 2 years ago

Would you rather add the other new dwarf planets to the list of full-fledged planets, dumbbrunette? Because they fit the definition of planet as well as Pluto does.

gbman
gbman posted over 2 years ago

Re-printing all of those textbooks is going to cost a lot of money. Are these "scientists" going to foot the bill?

crochethooker

Haha, no!  We're going to pay for it, because we're supposed to care enough to tell students the truth!

Mister Boomy

I haven’t really gotten astronomy anyway. What good have it ever done? I personally don’t care about other planets, i’d rather focus on my own.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 2 years ago

I'd have to say that Pluto can stay a planet, but all of the other little ones can stay what ever they are now. I think its so stupid of the astronomers to randomly look in space to find something n then when they do find anything they tell the whole world about it n want to classify it n name it w/o even really knowing what the new found rock really is in comparison to everything else

belacqua
belacqua posted over 2 years ago

Right! How dare they have an incomplete – and worse – ever growing understanding of the universe. Bastards! :P

Silthilar
Silthilar posted over 2 years ago

Has anyone on this post actually done any astronomy?  Besides just stargazing in your backyard?  It's not as easy as it seems.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 2 years ago

Im not saying its easy but they shouldnt just jump to conclusions especially if theyre gonna take it all back after teaching a whole generation that its true!!!

SO in the words of belacqua "Bastards" :P

belacqua
belacqua posted over 2 years ago
@Silthilar: Yes, even though I studied it for only two years, it was at least enough learn some detail about the enormous difficulties of a science that has nothing but extremely slight radiation to work with.

@dumbbrunette: (and now serious) Before, there was no definition for what a planet is and what distinguishes it from a dwarf planet, just gut instinct. Only after some understanding on how planetary systems are formed, a differentiating definition was possible (that took more than one generation of astronomers btw). And: all sciences still continue to progress big time, so get ready for many more things you learned in school to be overthrown by newer understanding.

Silthilar
Silthilar posted over 2 years ago

I think this post is evidence that it very well might go down in history.  More so than, say, Neptune or Venus.  Nobody talks about them.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 2 years ago

Very true these posts and category maybe the only history of Pluto to live on, que triste =( But if we did have to talk about another planet it would not be neptune or venus . i would have to vote for Saturn.

Silthilar

Saturn is pretty cool.  Either it or Mars, I'd say.

Not counting Earth, of course.

I was thinking that, maybe, just maybe, a better thing to say to our grandchildren/children would be something like this:

When I was your age I argued the issue of whether or not pluto should still be considered a planet or not through a series of comment post on beststuff.com!

It really does not matter if Pluto was qualifyed to be a planet or not to begin with or why it still isn't a planet now.

What matters is that in our lifetime we were taught in school "My very excellent memory just served up nine planets." or " My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas." And without Pluto this generation and future generations will be taught, " My Very Exhausted Mother Just Served Us Nothing..." That is just sad and it just means we are getting old, which is why it is okay to miss pluto being a planet because not many people want to face the fact that they are old and expiring rapidly.

& this comment is just a bunch of babble that i dont even understand myself but boredum can make you do pointless things...

blahhhh
