Along with its flipside, 1963, True Faith was perhaps the group’s most fully realised treatise on wistfulness, melancholia and vulnerability. What sets New Order apart from admirers and copyists like The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Pet Shop Boys, however, is the simple fact that you can actually HEAR how little they were trying. Just one glance at the lyrics to either song should tell you all you need to know about their “back of the fag packet half an hour before the session” approach to song writing. It still brings a tear to even the dryest eye, however.
And as for the cover! Perhaps one of the most effective works of graphic art in the last 50 years; a single autumn-brown leaf falling through an otherwise clear blue sky, captured at the very last point when it can said to be falling IN to picture, and just before it is about to fall OUT of the picture. “ET IN ARCADIA EGO ….”.
“I feel so extraordinary Somethings got a hold on me I get this feeling Im in motion A sudden sense of liberty I dont care cause Im not there And I dont care if Im here tomorrow Again and again Ive taken too much Of the things that cost you too much I used to think that the day would never come Id see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun…
When I was a very small boy, Very small boys talked to me Now that we’ve grown up together They’re afraid of what they see That’s the price that we all pay Our valued destiny comes to nothing I cant tell you where were going I guess there was just no way of knowing I used to think that the day would never come Id see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun…
I feel so extraordinary Somethings got a hold on me I get this feeling Im in motion A sudden sense of liberty The chances are weve gone too far You took my time and you took my money Now I fear youve left me standing In a world thats so demanding I used to think that the day would never come Id see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear I used to think that the day would never come That my life would depend on the morning sun…”
