Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider is a videogame franchise spanning three generations of console and more recently, a film series.

The series revolves around the female protagonist Lara Croft, and her adventures around the globe, traditionally in archaelogical and historical settings, as the name suggests. As a game, the series is famous for being one of the first ever titles to succesfully utilise a 3D gaming world, a standard that still continues to dominate the industry. While the series features many of the characteristics of modern videogames such as shooting and running, the series are undoubtedly born out of the platformer genre, with in-game puzzles often acting as side elements crucial to the player's progress.

The series debuted on the Sega Saturn in 1996 alongside the PC and original Playstation. Since then, it has become almost synonymous with the success of Sony's console, but as of recent years the franchise has gone multi-format. Beyond gaming however, the Tomb Raider franchise now exists across many different mediums including novels, comic-books and film, such is the success and appeal of the core idea, and, undoubtedly, the heroine herself, Lara Croft.
