When John Cale and Nico were in the band they were absolutely brilliant. Lou brought the lyrics covering edgy urban topics, Cale delivered the experimental arrangements ahead of their time and Nico added her icy delicate vocals to the mix.

I love them, and I do like “The Velvet Underground and Nico”, but I still think those two sound better seperate.

They aren't a psychedelic rock band. The VU was a revolution against all the pretentious crap that came with psychedelia, and the genres they spawned – like punk – eventually crushed psychedelia's children – like prog rock. That is why bands like the Jefferson Airplane sound ancient, and yet "The Velvet Underground & Nico" could have been made today.
I love them.
