“The pen is mightier than the sword” is an adage coined by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839 for his play Richelieu; Or the Conspirac. The Greek playwright Euripides, who died circa 406 BC. is supposed to have written: “The tongue is mightier than the blade.” William Shakespeare in 1600, in his play Hamlet Act 2, scene II, wrote: ”... many wearing rapiers are afraid of goosequills.”
