influential BBC2 show that ran from September 1971 until 1987. The programme hosted many seminal acts of the era, including the first British TV performance of Bob Marley and the Wailers as well as little known acts of whom any footage is now considered precious, such as Judee Sill. The show's focus on "serious" rock music rather than chart hits was emphasised by the lack of showbiz glitter; bands would often perform their songs in front of plain wooden boards (actually the backs of set walls from other programmes).

I loved this show. There was some great music (but not always!) Around the same time was Sight and Sound in Concert, where you could turn the sound down on the telly and listen to a simultaneous broadcast on your radiogram. Now I'm showing my age.

My God. What was the point of that?! I'll have to check it out. Was it any good?

In the days of tinny TV speakers you could watch the group perfom live on the telly with the sound down and listen at the same time on your hi fi speakers on radio 1. I watched lots of them. A list can be found here (if this works)  http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/series/13411

I don't think its a full list as I'm sure I saw the Sensational Alex Harvey Band on Sight and Sound. There were some really good ones. I particularly remember Split Enz, who were slightly bizarre, even by the standards of the day.
