Twain’s last book, and a book that unflinchingly addresses core problems with the idea of fate, free will, and a supposedly perfect and loving god who created man less than perfect and punishes him for it.

Mark Twain is obviously best known for Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, but IMO this book “Mysterious Stranger” is by far the most moving of his works. It’s unvarnished and harsh, but I think this one puts the contradictions of fate, free will and a loving creator into a mix that really makes you think.
Don’t read this one if you adhere to an “ignorance is bliss” attitude in life. If you read this, especially the end, your bliss will be challenged in a way shows the true greatness of Mark Twain. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
