The Little Prince (French Le Petit Prince), published in 1943, is French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s most famous novel, which he wrote while staying at a hotel in New York City.

Ostensibly a children’s book, it makes several profound and idealistic points about life and love. In it, Saint-Exupéry imagines himself stranded in the Sahara Desert, thousands of kilometers away from inhabited places, where he meets a young extra-terrestrial (though entirely human-appearing) prince…

totally spun out by the fact that this book is on here! i had to read this book in french for french class in year 12 and loved it. And last year, i found an english version in my little brother’s school bookclub and had to get it. the english version is good, but doesn’t do the book the same justice as in french. such an incredible story, for children and for adults, because it draws the connection between children and adults for the first time. as in, adults were once children and if they continue to see life through the same way that they saw it as children, then people might be happier and get along just that much better. such a feelgood book that opens your eyes to the truths that we seem to forget about and take for granted each day. Get it and read it

Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.

...

In the book it said: “Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.”

I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked something like this:

....

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.

But they answered: “Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?”

My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this: ...

The grown-ups’ response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.

Not just a children’s book..no matter what age, we can take something valuable away from it.

my favorite is “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; What is essential is invisible to the eye.” and “He was just a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I made him my friend, and now he is unique in the world.”

I really dislike the Little Prince. I hate that Rose of his. It almost gives credence to the fact that an emotionally abusive relationship is acceptable and is love the way he keeps running back to that Rose that offers him nothing in return except her snipes and demands and dramatic games.

That is true.

I like what the author said about finding beauty and treasure in the desert.

i cried a bit when the prince died….

“There was nothing but a flash of yellow close to his ankle. He remained motionless for an instant. He did not cry out. He fell as gently as a tree falls. There was not even any sound, because of the sand.”

it was so sudden, so beautiful, and yet, so sad.

Then I read it again when I was 12 or something and I cried again. T_T
This book is so meaningful. The kids of today should learn from it.
