Heath Ledger's joker is not the same as the traditional joker. In this movie, Batman was pinned down as an arrogant, pretentious jackass. The joker was spouting off fearless, Chaosian philosophy in such a brilliant manner, it seemed immediatly apparent that these writers were going for something different.
In the early days, the joker was a hokey dumbass, carrying oversized cheese bombs in a demeanor that made Jimmy Stewart's early career look astoundingly impressive. The next joker was made to be a psychopath who would kill on site, but choked when directly faced with the bat. Ledger's joker walks in through the front door, burns the money he makes, stirs up the world, and captures the true essence of fearlessness in a cruel world to anyone other than a Nihilist. There was so much more in this individual than we've witnessed in any Joker thus far.
