Superb book. Utterly superb. Too good for just children. I call it Northern Lights, though. It caused a lot of bleating among the fundamentalists, I gather... but who cares about that?

They are indeed. I went to see a two part stage play of the trilogy just before christmas which was... interesting! They entirely cut out Mary's character and all the wheelies and all that - which is understandable. The kids were great actors, much better than the adults.

I predict Eva Green making a fantastic Serafina.

I would love to see the stage production.

Unfortunately it was a little amateur dramatics production (put on by the wonderfully named HumDrum AmDram company, if I remember correctly) that only ran for a week in a 200 seat theatre. The stage was a tiny little raised platform. It all adds to the charm, though, eh? I prefer the intimate shows all-in-all.

Apparantly, I don't remember correctly and it wasn't their production. What on earth did I go and see by them, then?! Hmm…

I saw the stage production at the National Theatre. It was rather fantastic. But they left out the whole Mary Malone wheeled creatures plotline, probably because it would have been very difficult to engineer and would make the play even longer (it was already 6 hours or so). But i do hope they don't leave it out of the films.

The Wheelies were left out of the BBC Radio 4 adaptation (about 2000, 2001) also; but they did a superb job on the books as well.

Kittilyn, m'dear, is that a positive or negative reaction?

Kittilyn

Oh, definately positive.  I simply cannot handle all of the excitement.  My favourite book series ... just hope they don't butcher the story.

Perhaps with the success of The Lord of the Rings they''ll realise that you can be close to the text - or the spirit of the text - and still be successful.

Mind you, that didn't help the mid-eighties David Lynch-directed film of Dune, which is one of the few films that I find utterly unwatchable. Dreadful mess. And do you know who wrote the screenplay?
