After much public outrage, generally horrified press coverage, and a failed attempt from within the Staten-Generaal to censor the program, the The Big Donor Show was aired—but the end of the hour, rather than declaring a winner, the host revealed the people involved were actors, and the whole thing had been a hoax.
The idea was concieved of as a way to draw attention the scarcity of organ donors in the Netherlands, and to honor the network’s recently deceased founder, Bart de Graaff, who had been a kidney patient. Profits made from the text messages were donated to the Dutch Kidney Foundation, and in the few hours after the show BNN received SMS messages from over 12,000 viewers who told the network that they would fill in a donor form. The day after the show the official Dutch TV news broadcast “NOS News” announced that 30.000 people had requested a donor form to be sent to them following the program.
