One of the most significant concerts in music history occurred at Shea Stadium on Sunday, August 15, 1965, when The Beatles opened their 1965 North American tour at Shea Stadium to a record audience of 56,000. It was the first concert to be held at a major outdoor stadium and set records for attendance and revenue generation, demonstrating that outdoor concerts on a large scale could be successful and profitable. The stadium has hosted numerous concerts since.

Sure it was big and notable, but ultimately, Shea Stadium is the Sgt. Pepper of their concert career. A great moment to be certain, but hardly indicative of the band's overall impact. If I were to point a non fan of the band to a concert which would tell them a lot about how the band played live.. then I'd have to say their June 20 1965 appearance at the Palais Des Sports in Paris is a great one. Another one would be the October 1963 Royal Command Peformance in London. I'm sure there are many more but not many of them were filmed or recorded. Otherwise, most Beatles performances were sort of undone by all the chaos that went into putting them together and the limitations of putting on a decent sounding rock show before there was a lot of effort and expertise put into such things. I just saw Paul McCartney play on July 18, 2009 at Shea Stadium's replacement the Citi Field and it was a tremendous show!
