A tattoo, or dermal pigmentation, is a mark made by inserting pigment into the skin for decorative or other reasons. Decorative tattoos on humans are a type of body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding.
Tattooing has been practiced worldwide. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, wore facial tattoos. Tattooing was widespread among Polynesian peoples, and among certain tribal groups in the Philippines, Borneo, Africa, North America, South America, Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia and China. Despite some taboos surrounding tattooing, the art continues to be popular all over the world.

Best Way To Look Stupid After Age 40.
the first problem with tattoos is that they are generally associated with blue collar.
that means that those w/o tattoos are more versatile: someone w/o a tattoo can be blue collar (truck driver, biker, hippy) or white collar (doctor, lawyer, architect, stockbroker).
but someone w/ a tattoo will stand out negatively in the white collar world.
the second problem w/ tattoos is that they are permanent.
you know the cartoonist matt groening? he writes “life in hell.” his characters jeff and akbar have a “tattoo hut,” the motto of which is something like “where a fleeting notion stays with you to the grave.”
home-made tatoos rock!!!
^^I take it that we all must aspire to be doctors, lawyers, architects, and stockbrokers. Otherwise it wouldn’t “look stupid” for people to choose to forsake “versatility” by visually identifying themselves with the working class in a manner they find aesthetically pleasing.
Or maybe you’d prefer to do your own manufacturing, food processing, and construction work?
I like what zig ziglar said (I’m paraphrasing): “I will defend to the death the freedom of a young person to get a tattoo! Of course I will! but I won’t give him a job.”
so my point is that not getting a tattoo will not bar you from a job (any job); but getting a tattoo will bar you from certain jobs.
is that fair? maybe not. but it’s the reality.
I understand that. If you’d said, “it’s stupid to get tattoos if you plan to be a lawyer” or even “it’s stupid to get tattoos if you’re a college-bound young person, and still don’t know what career direction you’ll be going in”, I would not have balked.
Realistically, though, not everyone is going to a be a doctor or a lawyer; there are plenty of factors that limit social mobility even in the freest of societies, and of course, society needs blue collar workers, too. It’s not “stupid” to get a tattoo if you don’t aspire to move into a field where tattoos would limit your success, and there’s not anything wrong with not having white collar aspirations, either.
Your point still stands for those people it applies to. That’s just not everyone.
As long as tattoos are tastefully done, they shouldn’t bar you from anything… and if they’re not tastefully done, work harder to be the best.
Also, I think tattoos are finally becoming more socially acceptable. Mine is gonna kick ass… and I’m gonna be a teacher.
sall. shut up.
lol
a tattoo is like art. and art expresses who you are.
If you don’t like tattoos go Fuck yourself, becasue I dout you would go up to a Big Burley man with tattos and call him stupid. If you did you would get your ass kicked. : )
the angst against ink is more or less an complex called envy.
tattoos are cool. professional work, very colorful and detailed work is exceptional and great for any age.
I’m 36, I have 20 tattoos (so far) AND I REGRET NOTHING !!!
I only get them in black cause color fades…
you can be anything you want,, even with a tattoo.. just dont have one where it shows when you are dressed…. being a doctor or lawyer is not about having a tattoo its about what you want to do with your life…..
im sixty and regret having my tattoo now, but only because I have to keep my sleeves rolled down when im working…. and no it didnt stop me being in a professional career
snoody: “im sixty and regret having my tattoo now”
I rest my case.
snoody: ”..but only because I have to keep my sleeves rolled down when im working…. and no it didnt stop me being in a professional career”.
Today’s Tattoos Vs. The Old Day’s Tattoos By John Carter
Only bikers and servicemen had ‘em at one time Nowadays “respectable” people have them Hell, Roseanne & Cher have ‘em on their behind Poor Man’s art collecting is what I call it One tattoo and you’ll be addicted to it
Some people hate them, yet ask, hey can I have a peek? Beautiful colors + endless designs = each one unique In the past there was infections, if you know what I mean Today’s artist’s take courses on how to be 100% safe & clean
Sure they hurt a little, “but you won’t die” Surprise your friends and watch the look in their eyes Wow! You got a tattoo! Maybe I’ll get one, too! You reply, Go with me when I get #2 Tattooed people are cool, respectable – peace loving Other words, just like everyone else “except for their artwork” Ours hangs on no wall – it’s on our flesh

The poem above is not written by me,but i happen to saw it while net surfing one day,do check out the link above for more poems bout’ body arts.
I myself has 9 tattoos in total, and never in a day have i regretted havin’ them.I got a great job and cool friends who truly know how to appreciate this art. This wonderful poem tells it all i guess.
I’m thinking about getting my first tattoo sometime soon. Something small…not sure what though. Any ideas?
If you’re prone to weight gain, you may want to think about some place that generally isn’t, like your ankle or shoulder. I think it makes more sense to pick the location, then the design. And pick something that has some meaning, not just something that’s “cute” so you don’t regret it. Once you have an idea, Google some tattoo sites and see if you can find something that will help your tattoo artist see your vision.
I do not have any tattoos, but I like them. There is, I think, an unfair stigma attached to tattoos. You can say what you want, but most tattoos that people get seem to represent or honor a triumph or tragedy in their life. It is definitely something personal. Unless there is something about tattoos I don’t know, I doubt it presents someone from doing their job, whatever it may be. Coldeternal- 20? What are some of them?
My best friend has a 2- or 3-inch Celtic knot tattoo on his inner arm, and his job at the park requires him to wear a short-sleeved uniform. He has to wear a sweatband or band-aid over it at all times, which I think is ridiculous. He works in a park! Not even a national one. Just a lame, local park. Most of the patrons have larger, gaudier, etc. tattoos than him.
I won’t ever get the point in forbidding tattoos at work or elsewhere. Humans naturally should keep their right to treat their bodies the way they choose. World sometimes look really weird to me.
Yeah i totally agree with what summer said~ I jus’ don’t understand why some people would assume that,if you’ve got tattoos, you are some big bad baddie, you are doin’ drugs or in some traids! It’s pathetic!
True, I have seen it. It is pretty sad that people feel that way. Tattoo’s are a form of expression that does not hurt anybody.
Absolutely. Though it doesnt really happen anymore, does it? People nowadays are much more open minded in my opinion.
It certainly does, you would think that in this day and age people would be able to loosen up, but some attitudes take time to change. It’s like I always say, people are shocked to see someone with a tattoo because tattoos mean Ooooh, bad stuff, right? But who’s to say that the “clean-cut” person w/out a tattoo isn’t hiding something in their closet 10 times worse than what they think the tattooed person is doing? At least the person with the tattoo, and is proud to have it. I don’t know I’m just rambling…
no you’re not! it really makes sense to me. wow, gbman, from your support, you SHOULD get a tattoo!
I want a tattoo so much but I just cant have one because I’m so afraid of the pain it will cause and I think I will not stand the period after the tattoo is made. You should keep it away from water, sunlight, etc. Oh needs so much caring. And I am can never be that patient :)
Thanks Nicha. I have been thinking about getting one, but I want to make sure it’s the right one. I need to find one that will fit my personality, etc.
Take your time gbman, find one that is truly ‘You’ and i bet you’ll love it for life =)
Umm….you should get some pictures of good tattoos. Okay, well the Beatles tattoo looks pretty sweet.
I want a tattoo, but I dont even know what it would be of or where I would even put it….lol
Thanks Maybellene and XLolababyX your advise is very helpful, I have really been thinking about a tattoo, and I definitely want to make sure I get one I like.
I love the look of tatoos and i really want to get one, well actually more then one but im afraid it will hurt
It doesnt hurt, even more, you can talk by the phone while they tattoo you
I don't have any ^^', but my bf has a lot and he knows about it ;)
You don't even have any?
Well, I have actually heard from several other people like your bf that say that you feel it, but it's tolerable. Thanks!!
I've heard that it hurts a little when you first get it but that your body numbs the pain out, but the next day its really sore
have you ever fallen off your bike and scraped your leg all to shit and it burns so bad cuz of the dirt and the air hitting it?
uumm ....ya why?
oh nothing, just trying to make conversation…
...and then someone comes along carrying a bottle of rubbing alcohol and spills it into the wound. I hate when that happens.
Happened to you to eh… man! everytime…
Murphy's law… beautifully F'n illustrated!!
Would you like to elaborate gbman or is it a dirty little secret
Thanks for asking, but it's nothing dirty. I actually meant the picture with the tattoo on the inside of the bottom lip, that doesn't look it would be too fun. Well, since you did ask, I can tell you that I would not entertain getting a tattoo anywhere too "sensitive".
Good choice on your part :)
Why would anyone want a tattoo on their lip? or anywhere 'sensitive' for that matter?
wasn't that a mob thing? having a tattoo inside your lips.
