 Career

Takeshi Obata was born on February 11, 1969 in Niigata, Niigata Prefecture. In his manga, he usually is only responsible for the drawings while the story is written by other autors.

Obata made his first appearance as a mangaka in 1985. He handed in his one shot 500 Kounen no Shinwa to Shueisha and won the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize for Newcomers promptly. Thereupon he worked some time as an assistant of the mangaka Makoto Niwano. Not till 1989 he published another manga called Cyborg Jiichan G, which appeared in Shounen Jump. Over the next few years he worked on different, quite unknown manga, which were also published in the Shounen Jump magazine.

However,  he only made his breaktrough in 1998 when Hikaru no Go was released. This manga gained him a large fan community, was translated into several languages and finally made into an Anime. Thenceforward it constantly kept getting better for Takeshi Obata. Already his next manga, Death Note, got ahead of every manga he had drawn till then. The manga was translated into many different languages, the anime rejoiced in popularity and all over the world a sheer Death Note madness appeared. The next manga penned by Takeshi Obata was released in 2007. Blue Dragon Ral Grad based upon the video game Blue Dragon and was finished after four volumes.

Since 2008 Takeshi Obata works on a manga called Bakuman. It deals with the lives of two boys, who want to become successful and great mangakas one day.

By now it's impossible to think of a manga world without the great mangas of Takeshi Obata and he experiences a high reputation among his fans.
