Strange, how creative schemes work out. George Lucas must have thought that his best ideas at that time would emerge in what transpired to be called The Return of the Jedi.
This film is so great because it was directed by Irvin Kershner! The writing credits go to Leigh Brackett (screenplay) and Lawrence Kasdan (screenplay). George Lucas has the story credit. I know that this upsets some people, but THE BEST Star Wars movie is THE BEST because George Lucas DID NOT direct the film.
Leigh Brackett wrote classic science fiction. She was also a screenwriter, known for her work on famous films such as The Big Sleep (1945), Rio Bravo (1959), The Long Goodbye (1973) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
Lawrence Kasdan was a rookie on Empire, but he wrote the final screenplay after Brackett died of cancer in 1978. Lucas did some re-writes in 1979, but Kasdan later re-wote the screenplay. Kasdan also co-wrote The Raiders of the Lost Arc.
So, I don't give Lucas the lion's share of the credit for the actual greatness of The Empire Strikes Back film itself so much as him just being the creator of the storyworld and characters. As seen in the prequels, Lucas did not do well with the first two films when it comes to critical acclaim from the fans. Jar-Jar binks? Need I say more? Well, I will say this, The Revenge of the Sith saved the prequel trilogy. I liked most of that film (except that stupid death by broken heart bull shit!).

The best of the six; but I think it suffers because the most dramatic scene – the battle on the ice planet Hoth – is so early on.
I’ve never seen it on the big screen, though. I might change my mind if I had.
that’s certainly not the most dramatic scene
Yeah, Empire is the best one.
By a long way.

A title almost as stupid as The Phantom Menace.
Sheesh... but still, I wish I had his money!
It ends on such a down note. I mean, that’s what life is, a series of down endings.
