In this scene from The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker/Spider-Man (played by Andrew Garfield), is struck down via a taser by Captain George Stacy and his squad and is handcuffed. Captain Stacy removes Spider-Man's mask, and in that instant, Spider-Man opens his eyes and immediately begins defending himself.
But then the Captain (played by Denis Leary), fires his gun into the air and orders Spider-Man to turn around. Realizing he's been caught, Spider-Man grits his teeth and faces the Captain, and when he does, a helicopter light reveals the unmasked superhero to be none other than Peter Parker, the boyfriend of the Captain's daughter, Gwen.
The teary-eyed Peter nervously approaches the Captain and informs him that the Lizard's headed directly for OsCorp Tower, where Gwen is. Upon hearing this, the Captain is terrified. As Peter observes, he has to let him go. Although the Captain does not lower his gun, he allows Spider-Man to leave.
Spider-Man nods gratefully as he redons his mask. As Spider-Man leaves, the Captain orders his colleagues not to shoot at him, but one of them does anyway and hits the superhero in the leg, causing him visible pain and perhaps a fever as well. And yet, despite this, Spider-Man continues on to save countless lives. As he does so, swinging from building to building, the Captain orders civilians and other law enforcement to leave Spider-Man alone to complete his mission.
Then Gwen finds her father and begins to explain that Spider-Man needs the reptilian antidote, and at first she thinks her father doesn't understand, but he says that yes, he does, because he now knows her boyfriend's secret. Gwen then begs her father to make sure Peter doesn't get hurt, and her father agrees to this. Soon after, the Captain comes to aid Spider-Man by distracting the Lizard and buying Spider-Man enough time to administer the reptilian antidote from Gwen.
My point is that, although the two men obviously get off to a very bad start, that startling revelation of just who Spider-Man is not only sparks a true understanding between them but also a brief but shining alliance.
