"Ser o Parecer" is RBD's first single of their third Spanish studio album Celestial. This marks the song as their most successful Spanish single in the United States, as well as the world. It is also their second song (and their first Spanish song) to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (the first one being "Tu amor").
"Ser o Parecer" narrates a classic story of unrequited love: it tells of a girl who has fallen for a guy who never pays any attention to her. The lyrics of the song describe the girl's unsuccessful attempts to catch the guy's attention and "despertar el interés vacío," or "awaken the empty interest [in her]." Unfortunately, the song's title loses much of its meaning in translation. Its literal English equivalent is "To be, or to appear to be?"
Music VideoOn October 2, 2006, EMI announced that the music video accompaniment to the song was finished. EMI Televisa released the music video on YouTube. It was directed by Esteban Madrazo and shot in São Paulo, Brazil during their Brazilian Tour 2006. The music video features all of the members of the band in trashy, yet sexy, post-grunge attire. The video illustrates how the members changed from virtual unknowns to international superstars. In addition, it features CGI monster-like creatures on the streets along with the group.
