Schmendrick the Magician

The incompetent wizard from Peter Beagle’s “The Last Unicorn”. Initially, he relies more on sleight of hand because his ability to cast spells is so unreliable. But because he dreams of something more, he can perceive the unicorn as it actually is and becomes the wizard he’s always wanted to be. “We are not always what we seem, and hardly ever what we dream.”
