Am I the only one that thinks Romeo & Juliet were more stupid than romantic? I mean, I LOVE Shakespeare, I really do. I’ve even got his complete works, and 3 of my top 5 favorite plays are Shakespeare, but I just could never get into Romeo & Juliet. These kids hardly knew each other…. They SAW each other at a party, she was only like 13, and I’m sure the whole situation was just more due to over-active hormones than love. Maybe that’s just me though.

Wuthering Heights has much more romantic/tragic quality to me than Romeo & Juliet.

Wow. Clearly it is a great lyric drama but not Shakespeare's best. It's not Romantic either - that would be Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley, Keats, Austen, et al. It is tragedy but of a lesser sort. Critics and common readers are in general accord as to which is Shakespeare's best achievements. Here they are (in no particular order):

A Midsummer Night's Dream - very good and very funny; undercuts everything R&J expounds on

The Merchant of Venice

Henry IV, Parts One and Two

As You Like It

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark - possibly the best

Twelfth Night, Or What You Will

Measure for Measure - most critics suggest this one

Othello, Moor of Venice

King Lear - vies with Hamlet as being the best

Macbeth

Antony and Cleopatra

The Winter's Tale

The Tempest

Those are the best (one could also include the sonnets). Romeo and Juliet while admirably written and with at least three great characters (the Nurse, Mercutio, and Juliet - of course!), pales in comparison to the above listed. I must admit that I do like Juliet and Mercutio could have definitely run off with the play with his great 'Queen Mab' speech, but Juliet is still no Rosalind or Cleopatra and Mercutio is no Falstaff. I like to think that if Juliet hadn't died, she would have been such a witty, intelligent, mature persona - she does indicate some wisdom with her 'swear not by the moon the inconstant moon' speech. Still though, R&J could not hold a candle to the 14 mentioned above. Maybe if the question was the most popular, then R&J would be up there with Hamlet. But the question is the best which it is not. A good play though, fun to read.
