According to the tree-growers here (Wisconsin), buying a real tree is more environmentally friendly because it encourages the growers to plant more and more Christmas trees. While they are growing to harvest height, they provide food and shelter for the animals and birds. Whenever a grove is harvested, more trees are planted again.
