Usually labelled a horror movie, also described as a black comedy and an offbeat Western, "Ravenous" is that and more. Set in 1847, in the Sierra Nevadas, it has elements of classical tragedy and "The Thing," Nietzsche and "F Troop," a wonderful cast, a strange and haunting score, take-your-breath-away scenery, and a grimly realistic portrayal of life and death at a frontier fort, combined with a touch of the supernatural and the chance to ponder the ethics of survival in a pitless environment. Also, it's very quotable: "War hero! Afraid of the sight of blood?" (If you are afraid of the sight of blood, I have to warn you. Consider yourselves warned.)
