I’ve owned mice, hamsters, gerbils, and rats, and rats are by far the most rewarding small pets to own. They are friendly, curious, playful, easy to care for, and fun to bond with. They’re actually rather dog-like in their ability to form real attachments to and friendships with their owners, and they love to socialise. They get very, very excited when they see you coming over to the cage to get them out and play with them. I’ve had seven in my life and I’ve loved them all; most of them have ridden around on my shoulders and had fun being petted, but I’ve had a couple of very shy ones too. It can take time to form a trusting bond with shyer rats.
It’s best two get two or more rats at a time since they are social and love to play and will get lonely in a cage by themselves. Also, often rats love to chew on stuff, so you’ve got to keep a close eye on them.
