The piano is widely used in western music for solo performance, chamber music, and accompaniment. It is also very popular as an aid to composing and rehearsal. Although not portable and often expensive, the piano’s versatility and ubiquity has made it among the most familiar of musical instruments.

A strong foundation for any other instrument.

I love playing the Piano
Very relaxing thing to do in your spare time. Anyone can learn as well.
iep..gotta love the piano!
before i die i want to learn to play…
Go for it, MastaKink! It changed my life. And it doesn’t matter if you toy with a ‘cheap’ electronic keyboard first; the point is that it leads you into exploring the vast world of music for yourself.
And I’ve found some real treasures for myself… my profile’s open if you care to rummage through it.
Isn’t it very hard to learn at 30, unexperienced of music? :-|
Depends how determined you are, Lilybert. And I certainly don’t mean that people who learn to play as adults are likely to become professional at it.
Generally speaking, it’s certainly more difficult to learn new skills as an adult rather than as a child… but I would say that if you can count to five you can make music on an ‘intelligent’ keyboard.
The (non-digital) piano is a lot more of a challenge; but I got good enough to play continuo in an amateur orchestra I was once associated with.
Real music is live performance; not recording.
People say that piano is the king of all instruments…
1, 2, 3, 4… ... oops. I sure don’t want to be a professional, just learning to produce some decent sound would be a dream. But I don’t have that much time to take on such an activity. I dunno.
Hey I knew someone who’s still learning piano at the age of 48…
You never stop learning. My mother – who has great difficulty in walking far – learnt to drive one of those electric cars to get around our local supermarket.
She was about 80 at the time.
If you ever think you’ve acquired as much technique as you’ll ever need, then you’re fooling yourself. For example, if you’ve never played anything by Rakhmaninov, then it comes as a bit of a shock to see one of his piano works in score for the first time. The first question is usually How on earth do I get my fingers round that?
The problem arises from the fact that Rakhmaninov was a tall man – once described as ‘six foot six of Russian gloom’ – and had hands like shovels. So some of his works are a tad difficult for us smaller-handed mortals.
ahahaha, my ex g/f had that same problem… ;)
