The Peace (in Italian 'Pace') Flag, became very popular in 2003 as a way for Italian - and European - people to show they were strongly against the military intervention in Iraq.
Everyone started displaying the flag from balconies, terraces, windows, cars and bikes. So, day after day, the cities were overwhelmed with the colours of peace.

oh that seems funny, also impossible in the netherlands a think
It was not funny, actually... it was very intense, and I can tell you it was a great disappointment when political leaders decided to ignore the voice of the people....:(
I think they had some in Germany too.. not sure, though...
but the military intervention is discussable? And its next to a "funny look" also a strong sign of the people. You must see the positive things in this i hope? i never heard about actions like this.
In Italy, about 85% of the people - regardless of their political views - were against military intervention in Iraq, at least against Italy taking part in it. That is why I think it is very sad that in the end leaders decided to go their own way... as you know, some other European countries stayed out of this war.
Of course I see there is also a funny side in this, let's say lively and positive. I can tell it was a great view when you walked the streets in those days... all the colours and stuff. ;)
Possibly in Netherlands you did not have this action. But I think some other European countries did have it, though.
what other countries had a part in the war? england, spain and germany as far i remember right?
No, Germany was out of this war, at least in 2003. France and Germany did not take part.
USA, UK, Italy, Spain, and other European countries I think... but later on other countries joined, so I am not sure.
Oh, and Italy has now withdrawn from Iraq... better late than never! ;)
i wonder, since its all screwed up there, if its wise to leave it totally. things went bad and you cant turn around it. time will tell im afraid, i m gladd i dont have to make desicions like that
I can see your point...
I remember I kept this flag out of my window for about 2 years, I don't remember very well...
Fond memories!!
i was against it as well. Living in the USA and all, I'm pretty ashamed of our president. But now that we've made the mistake of going over there, I don't think we should leave until we've helped them rebuild everything. If we left now, not only would terrorists follow us back, but we would be leaving tons of innocent people without homes or means of support. We'd be leaving them to fiend for themselves against the tyranny of the terrorists.
I am very confused about what to do now. Very sad for all that happened to the people there in these years, and keep thinking it was a very bad, unnecessary war.
Theow and Kandy, and anyone posting here:
I would be very curious to know if you had this peace flag thing in your countries!
Just curious.... thanks for voting it, anyway!
Hey, very nice Swissbob!!! I didn't even know this existed!!!
Cool........ well, my neighbours still have a peace flag at the window... and I am sure I saw many of them in my city, they are still there. Must be about 50 in the whole city. In 2003 there were thousands of them.
Wow, what a great archive… must add some of the pics I could take here.
