Peace is commonly understood to mean the absence of hostilities. Other definitions include freedom from disputes, harmonious relations and the absence of mental stress or anxiety, as the meaning of the word changes with context. However, there are others who would say that the absence of hostilities would refer to only those hostilities which are evident and that true peace only derives from the mind of each individual.
Peace may refer specifically to an agreement concluded to end a war, or to a lack of external warfare, or to a period when a country’s armies are not fighting enemies. It can also refer more generally to quietude, such as that common at night or in remote areas, allowing for sleep or meditation. Peace can be an emotion or internal state. And finally, peace can be any combination of these definitions. The symbol of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, which has grown to become a widely-recognized peace symbol.

Peace has now become an academic field of study. Johan Galtung, a big daddy in peace studies suggest that peace is more than just the absence of direct violence, you know punching someone in the head, blowing someone up…. He calls this negetive peace. Peace can be defined as the a person reaching their actual potential without interuption from other forms of violence also, such as indirect violence, structural violence, political violence, psychological violence, and cultural violence. He has mediated well over 140 (my last count) international and intranational conflicts. Check him out he has some really really amazingly amazing words of wisdom.

Peace is something that can only be achieved through our own positive behavioural changes on the personal individual level. We must learn alternative means of conflict resolution which in turn must be inclusive and respectful of eachothers cultures. Only when people realise that conflict can be positive and used as constructive dialogue to improve all parties positions so they can achieve their actual potential, can humanity start seeing the back of stupid things happening because one group or individual get pissed off at another and get all hoity and fisty cuffs.
We need to teach our children empathy and respect of others. We also need to teach them how to deal with frustration and conflict that doesn’t involve smacking there friend over the head with a frying pan.

Exactly. I think it’s funny all the people I talk to who say that they’re for peace, but seem to be really disrespectful, rude, or inconsiderate, as if peace doesn’t involve them in their world, but other people and war. Peace starts with ourselves. If we can’t respect and care for one another (or at least try) how can we critisize the rest of the world?

While we still have war mongering US conservatives, the US and other first world military industrial complex and fundamentalist religion – war will stay.
Peace plan: Get rid of the above institutions. Give highest quality education for all. Work for a better standard of living for everyone (while preserving the environment).
How? Use the funds for war , for peace.
