I have decided to dub Paris Hilton “America’s Daughter.” I can think of no other person on the planet more worthy of the title. Say what you will about her. I myself am not what you would call a fan, I don’t consider her very admirable, but we as a nation watch her play, learn, enjoy her family fortune, as though she were our very own child.

I mean, look at the outpouring of anger over this recent in-prison, out-of-prison debacle. I think it’s clear that if Paris really were “America’s Daughter”, America wouldn’t let her get away with so much crap. Paris pisses us off, but we don’t feel responsibility for her, because she’s out of our hands. Instead of lovingly watching her grow, we sort of stand there and stare in a mixture of fascination and revulsion as she hurtles ever-closer to the point where she inevitably self destructs.

IMHO , that ain’t parental. If anything, Paris’s status is that of neighbor’s kid, the one who’s messed up life you point to to feel better about your own parenting skills.

Gosh, baily… I didn’t know you felt so strongly about Ms. Hilton. I guess I just haven’t seen her do anything that deserves such hatred. In my opinion, her fame and personality are as much products of our culture as are our own personalities. I think most of America would let her get away with what she does in a heart beat, and proudly. Is freedom of expression not an American staple? Above, you compared her to Marie Antoinette. I agree with this comparison as well. However, that girl was eventually beheaded by her country. The girl has built a sellable name playing to the lowest market – she has done well too – you may hate her but she is self made regardless of the hotels – good luck to her and all that sail… etc etc I think she is a great hate figure but I dont actually hate her – she is a product of greedy western civilisation. I asked my daughter what she wanted for her birthday and she said playboy stuff – i presume she was refering to the logo that appears on all things kiddy these days, whether it is Britney or Paris or Playboy or all the other terrible influences ruining our childrens lives and making sex symbols of kids who should be left well alone until their late teens in the end the only conclusion I can come to is this is the price of freedom – my grandad fought for this freedom – we hate it but thats life – I told my daughter -NO! I don’t think she’s so much a product of a “greedy” civilization, as a vain civilization. We are a people who crave attention and respect by many. Possibly because most of us have been raised by television shows and public school teachers who stand up and talk in front of large groups.

Tell me about it. Children today know a lot more than they used to. We could treat that as a problem, but the real problem is that they’re told by the world around them that perversion is way to live. If children learned about copulation from the direction of what it’s natural purpose is, rather than how it feels, then we might not have to worry about them knowing about it.

Seriously, I was only remarking that the way our culture treats Paris doesn’t seem especially affectionate to me. I don’t think it’s a hateful remark to point out that she’s seemingly not on the most constructive of paths in her life at the present moment, with the drugs and jail and whatnot. But my point was more that gawking, tabloid culture is not parental. Tabloid culture delights in the misery of it’s “child”; it’s there to take photographs when she messes up, and pays twice as much for a photo if she happens to be crying in it. We may “watch her play” as you put it, but if you’re watching your kid play on the playground and they fall and skin their knee, you don’t run for the video camera. I’m not saying no one could have the parental attitude you suggest; I’m just not seeing it from America generally.

Obviously, I’m not calling for her head. On the other hand, I do have a serious pet peeve about the “the only reason to hate her is jealousy” argument. I don’t have any deep burning hatred for the girl, but surely it’s possible for me to dislike her because she makes drives drunk, makes racist remarks, and generally comes off like a brat?

Well, of course a parent doesn’t run for the video camera during the bad times, but a collective parent of millions of people would have to, so that the whole parent could see it happen. And one might argue that those of us who dislike her are the part of the collective parent that is disappointed in its child.

Really, I think your interpretation is a kind one. But I still think there’s a difference between the mentality of a parent watching their child in good times and bad, and the average tabloid reader looking for dish.

A parent wants to know if their child has a skinned knee so they can rush in with band-aids and make everything better. If a parent knew their child was suffering, or behaving self-destructively, or just generally being publically dragged through the mud at every available occasion, if that parent knew that and didn’t have means to fix it, knowing would be torturous, not fun. If Paris were America’s Daughter, photos of her crying in the backseat of a squad car on the way to jail would turn our collective stomachs, but instead, we’re living in a culture where that sort of thing is packaged and sold as light entertainment; par for the checkout line. America is fascinated with her, sure, but America’s also the country that made her sex video, the one she claimed to never want released, into a multi-zillion dollar hit. Her problems don’t move us to action, and they don’t make us miserable. Her problems sell soft drinks.

I do see where you’re going with this daughter analogy, but if she’s “ours” in the sense of reflecting us as a culture, her values are the values we didn’t teach intentionally, and never wanted to see emulated. It’s a disfunctional relationship at the very best.

Paris Hilton is a spoiled brat that’s had everything given to her on a silver platter all her life and never been disciplined for the little ‘socially coherent wanderings’ that most of us have done at one time or another. The fascination is that she’s rich, popular, and now she’s famous for being famous. She’s the high school cheerleader that we all hate because she gets all the attention from the boys and she gets away with murder while we get the beats for spilling paint on the garage floor. You know what I mean. The rich get richer and the poor… well, we’re the slobs that buy the celebrity magazines and buy into the hype and push her status into the troposphere…

It’s the same old story we’ve heard time and time again, poor little rich girl…

Do you? That’s funny, I’m perfectly happy with under $35,000 a year. I don’t know how I managed to get this way, but I don’t like money at all. I work more than I have on my time clock (I’m doing it more to get out of the house than anything else), I throw my money away on things I never use regularly, without the least bit of regret, and when I’m down to my last $50, I find it thrilling. I can’t imagine why I would need more than I have… If I won the lottery tomorrow, I’d probably give it all away to charity. I think Paris Hilton is just what I would be under similar circumstances. So who am I to judge?

See, I agree with you in some ways, but that kind of reasoning is only practical to a point.

By your logic, you could concievably dismiss anyone’s behavoir, ie, saying that you’d had their upbringing, you’d probably be the same way too. That’s useful in the respect of being able to be compassionate, but that shouldn’t negate the concept of personal responsibility, either.
