It’s usually better than closed-mindedness

Because open-minded people are easy to understand and communicate with. They are delighted, satisfied and happy in any situation. Open minds think rationally and straight.

if you aren’t open-minded you miss out on so many chances and people. You should try to give everyone and everything a chance. You wouldn’t like it if people didn’t do that for you so you should make sure and do it for them!

I’m not attacking you or anything Jif, but please explain how these posts correspond with Existentialism.

Jif
Jif posted about 1 year ago

(My dear Vano) I was referring to existentialism as a literary phenomenon, not a philosophical one, “Mr. Sartre.” :x If you scroll back and re-read the sequence of comments, you’ll see what I meant. (Or perhaps you won’t, but it’s still funny).

Learning is the act of closing an open mind.

Vano
Vano posted about 1 year ago

You’re right. You see… I didn’t have to learn anything to know she was a fox. It was just a realization that came up from the very core, naturally, of my being.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted about 1 year ago

to a certain extent thats really tru, by learning wat other people think u should know ur losing ur self n become more like them (the general society)

Hideous Monster
Hideous Monster posted about 1 year ago

Well, even being introduced to reality closes your mind. For instance, you quickly find out that most things move toward the ground when nothing is standing in their way, whether it's explained to you or not. If it weren't for the exceptions I've seen, I'm sure my mind would be completely shut on that matter by now.

Perhaps you know Arthur C. Clarke's three Laws:

!. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.

2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

'Elderly' means 30+. Maybe 40 in some disciplines. There are of course exceptions to this; Richard Feynman springs to mind, though he was a theoretician rather than a practical scientist.

Hideous Monster
Hideous Monster posted about 1 year ago
That "Indistinguishable from magic" quote has been on my mind lately, with these strange devices circulating the alternative news outlets.
Finrod
Finrod posted about 1 year ago

Hmm...

Interesting reading, HM. I'll read it more carefully later.

My 'magic' example would be GPS to a 19th century sailor... or a mobile phone to anyone predating Clerk Maxwell's work on electromagnetism.
