In this movie Salieri is the court composer to the King. Mozart is commissioned to do an opera. Salieri is a fair composer at best, and he is jealous of Mozart’s talent. Salieri asked Mozart to attend a performance of one of his pieces, after the show Salieri asks Mozart for his opinion, here is the full scene:

Salieri: Mozart, it was good of you to come!

Mozart: How could I not?

Salieri: How… Did my work please you?

Mozart: [hesitantly] I never knew that music like that was possible! 1st dig

Salieri: [uncertainly] You flatter me.

Mozart: No, no! One hears such sounds, and what can one say but…”Salieri.” Blammo! the finishing touch!

Better…?

The movie is a piece of fiction.

Well you must know sir, allow me to argue that it is loosely based on his life. Did you like the movie? I thought it was fantastic.

I agree that it is loosely based on the lives of historic figures but how can a man who retained the position of court composer for three emperors over a period of 50 years be considered “a fair composer at best”. People who take the time to listen to my music usually consider it to be quite good if not excellent. Unfortunately not very many people hear my music anymore. It seems that I have become a villain, something to appease the Mozart lovers who cry over their hero’s untimely demise. All the rumours are false but they do make a much more interesting movie than the true story would.

I must now agree with you regarding the way you were portrayed in the movie. I did find it kind of odd that a court composer such as yourself would be considered “a fair composer at best”. I guess the director/writer wanted to really give the audience a contrast between Mozart and yourself. The tactic (to the moviegoer) was very effective.

Ok – well thanks for the explanation – i forgot to best it so never saw the reply til now – as for the conversation well i think anyone that can even write music is fantastic even if its not popular music – as for the claim of actually being the man well i guess i am saddam and that is almost as unlikely

GBMAN - Are you aware that someone actually created the Antonio Salieri person just to have that conversation with you - weird or what

I... I... did not know that! That is wild! You know I thought it was kind of funny that Salieri popped up and made comments. I just checked him (or her... ) out, and they didn't even best it.

I'm glad you finally got to see my explanation.

i only think that salieri was not as genius as mozart; it doesn't mean he wasn't good!
