No Negativity

(this is my crude attempt at a clever way to make a suggestion)

So here’s the deal. The Best Stuff in the World is a fun place. It’s a place where you can express yourself freely and easily, thus fulfilling one of the human needs. I have a good time when I’m here, but sometimes that is interrupted by something. People reproaching, and otherwise belittling subjects which others have nominated as the best in a certain category. I ask: If this site is for the best stuff in the world, why would someone deliberately point out faults in something? To make something else look better in comparison? Are we really that lowly? Some even go so far as to create categories with negative implications in which to place things they dislike. I realize that opinions can be negative as well as positive, but expressing disfavor for something on a site like this which revolves around opinions is, in a way, attacking those who favor it, and that’s something that’s likely to lead to conflict.

The solution is simple: Hail the best, ignore the rest.

(P.S.: seems the category name was too long. It should be “The Best Way to Make thebeststuffintheworld.com the Best”)

I know what you mean.

I’m not a fan of the negative-positive categories, such as “the best reason to kill yourself”. It’s also a bit annoying when you want to say something is the best and 80% of the images are for representing something bad about that thing.

:)

I agree with the sentiment, that was the original hope of the site. Trusted members can remove categories, so that’s one option.

I think this is something that needs to be discussed more. Once we get some new features happening, we’ll start more discussion on this.

Seriously. Ok about not dissing other people’s faves or being harsh in the comments. Some irony though is good, for example in creating neg. categories – should I delete category “best job to avoid” where I put “teacher” (it was my first job and hated it), or not list Berlusconi as “best criminal”? Ah, that’d break my heart :-) Anyway, I’ll wait for worstuff to be really really mean.

I like irony, I’m evil!

I guess “Best Job to Avoid” is not a problem but “Best Criminal” might be. I don’t like Berluscuoni neither and I appreciate the joke in a way but if I want to criticise him, I would rather leave a message.

Having said that, I recognise it is quite funny to find the same item in “Best Political Leader” and “Best Criminal”. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.

I’ve been withholding comment as I am watching several categories where negativity just may rear it’s ugly head. If I don’t like or care for something, I usually will not comment on it, maybe to say “I like this instead?” I think what we have to put a stop to (and won’t be able to, I know that’s negative, but it is also reality) is the bestuffers who will chime in on a subject for the sole purpose of being negative. This website is drawing from a wide base of tastes, nationalities, cultures, beliefs, etc. All entitled to our own opinions, and as long as those opinions do not harshly criticize others’ opinions, but rather offer up intelligent discussions. I think we have something!

There is nothing wrong with a health debate, thats not negitivity, we discuss and yes sometimes come to different conclusions, but thats how we learn surely sometimes negitivity is a good thing in order to challenge and prove, not everything in life can be left purely to faith.

YES !! We all have a freedom of speech, to say what are hearts and minds want to say.. I agree that opinions, particularly NEGATIVE FEEDBACKS also do have a good thing for us to improve ourselves.. but some of the feedbacks are too rude, harsh and offending to that person being criticize that just can result to conflicts within the members.

If you think of that stuff is worst, instead of criticizing, why not suggest ways for him to improve. Saying good things/ (+) comments to that stuff means we love and admires it and were not asking you to love it too, so PLS have some RESPECT ! anyways, you don’t want your stuff being criticize..RIGHT?

Well, it’s obvious we are all in agreement on this subject. Oh, you can certainly give your opinions or views about a subject, otherwise we wouldn’t be here at Bestuff.com,

I love the fact that we can all talk about a subject and debate it, by doing this with respect you even get to know some of the other members quite well. But there are some members who have left comments that are “too rude, harsh and offending to that person”, and those are the members that I will never get to know, quite frankly I haven’t got the time, or should I say that my time is far too valuable for a pointless discussion with someone who posts just to say something very negative and offensive.

I’m probably repeating myself, and the other good comments in this thread, but I feel very strong about it. We should all observe the “Golden Rule”.

mmmmm not convinced – although I have seen some quite pointless comments i have not come accross much “negative for the sake of being negative” comments. (Thought I would use pointless speech marks)

Though I have nothing against the presence of thoughtful-but-critical comments, I hold onto my vote for this one and hope for an eventual policy adjustment (with admittedly little clue of the likeliness of that) for that one reason that has nothing to do with comments at all: negative categories, AKA using Bestuff as a Worstuff. It's like lackadaisy said; It only clutters and confuses the system. Just search "worst" and you'll see a pile of categories that mind-bogglingly state "Best Worst ..." (and if you look harder you may find various ways of wording "the best - no, the worst"). For a lighthearted view on the problem there, see The Best Worst Thing to do in Bestuff.comTongue out. Perhaps then I should be voting in favor of Theworststuffintheworld.com; it's what might be necessary to stop those things from coming into here.

By the way, not all of the problem categories explicitly say "worst"; some are more clever about it. Nevertheless I'd prefer not to see space used by "I.E. is the best browser to download Firefox" or vice versa. I also wonder if MySpace registers as 150-200% as popular as it really is because of so many people actively declaring it the "Best way to show the world what a dumв@5$ you are" (among other things).
