In his first heat in Florianopolis, Neco Padaratz advanced to the next round of the Mormaii Costão Pro along with local surfer Jean da Silva. Today's conditions were good with waves around 3 feet, as the third round kicked off with the top seeded surfing their first heat. In the first heat of the third round South African Greg Emslie had an amazing performance breaking all the records of the event scoring 9,60 and 9,27 in his two best rides. He scored a total of 18,87 out of possible 20.
"It's really good to start the year winning, I was very focused and relaxed in my heat and I realy enjoyed it. After my first high score, I got even more relaxed and the scores just came". Said Greg, who is top seeded 1 in the Mormaii Costão Pro.
"I like to start well in the WQS as well as in the WCT, but if I'm doing well in the WCT I sort of loose focus in the WQS. However it is very important to compete in the WQS, specially in Brazil and most specially in Florianopolis which is a city I really like". Completed Greg, just after his spectacular win. Brazilian Gilmar Silva finished the heat in second, with Warwick Wright (South Africa) in third and local surfer Adriano Lemos in forth.
In the next heat 2006 Brazilian Champion Jihad Kohdr finished in forth place with American Shea Lopez, who is competing since the first round advancing to next round along with Joel Centeio (Hawaii). William Cardoso (Brazil) finished in third. "The tide was getting a little lower and the rides got longer. I started the heat surfing on the left side and I managed to catch some good right-handers that gave me good scores. I just arrived from Hawaii and I didn't want to loose in my first heat. Now I'm very confident and I hope to get to final here". Confesses Joel Centeio.
The crowd was really looking forward to watch Neco Padaratz's first heat. The former two time WQS champion didn't disappoint the crowd overcoming Jean da Silva (Brazil) and finishing in the first place. "I think that many of the heats I had in my life were decided just before the end, that's why I never give up. I just didn't want to loose in my first heat like I did last year in this event". Said Neco Padaratz.
After a one year suspension for using steroids, Neco climbed his way back to the WCT in 2006, and couldn't have a better start in this event. "I just want to go further here, last year I spent six months without advancing a single heat and even so, I qualified for the WCT. Now God has given me another chance to show what I'm capable of. Certainly the event I want to win the most is the one in France (where he was tested positive for steroids) and I think there is something out there waiting for me". Confesses Padaratz.
The Brazilian Jean da Silva was leading the heat until the last minutes when Neco turned things around on his favor. "I'm very happy for being here and competing against Neco once again. He surfed really well to win the heat, and what matters is that we are both through to the next round. I've been competing very well this year so far, I made three finals out of three events I competed. I won two of them and I'm very concentrated to have a good start in the WQS". Affirmed Jean da Silva who is going to surf against the event's sensation Greg Emslie in the next round.
Others prominences from the third day of competition in Florianopolis were Brazilians Heitor Alves, Pablo Paulino and André Silva along with Hawaiians Kekoa Bacalso and Ola Eleogram had great heats and advanced to the next round. South African Royden Bryson, American Nathaniel Curran, Corey Ziems (Australia) and Brazilian Rodrigo Dorneles have also advanced to the forth round. In the heats remaining from the second round that went on early this morning the winners were: Fábio Silva (BRA), Daison Pereira (BRA), Daniel Redman (RSA), Aritz Aranburu (ESP), Austin Ware (USA), Teppei Tajima (JAP), Marco Polo (BRA) and Mason Ho (HAW).
The MORMAII COSTAO PRO is brought by MG2 Projetos along with the FECASURF (Federation of Surfing of Santa Catarina), the event is sponsored by Mormaii, Costao do Santinho Resort & Spa and the Government of Santa Catarina. The event is also supported by Florianopolis Local Government, UNIVALI and officially published by Radio Atlantida, Sportv and Fluir Magazine. The event is broadcasted by the website: www.globoesporte.com from today all the way until Sunday, and by Sportv between 10:00 and 12:00 am on Saturday and Sunday.
