Speaking totally as a prof. drummer now, and having to do a lot of studio work, on both sides of the glass…all these guys are masters. Jaco defined the outer boundaries, Bootsy is the best at his thing, but NATHAN …Nathan is the “Swiss Army Knife” of bass players. Any style, any vibe, you get impeccably tasty tracks. He is sometimes too tame for my taste with Fourplay ...or more precisely, the whole group is. Maybe I’m just old and miss the energy of what they were doing in the 70s & 80s.
I would just like to call your attention to the fact that your posting this in the category “the best bass player in the world” is (hopefully unintentionally) disrespectful to the late best bass player in the world. I think we all know who that was.
The category “the best bass player” was created for people like Nathan East.
The category “the best bass player in the world” was created out of reverence and respect for Jaco.
Art is subjective…we all have an opinion. I respect yours, but I’m standing by mine.
Incidentally, my favorite Jaco moments are during the Joni Mitchell Shadows & Light tour. If you’re familiar with those recordings & film footage, and compare and contrast that with the (relative) insanity of his Word Of Mouth period (not all of it, but you know what I mean), then you’ll understand why I’m partial to bass players like Nathan.
haha well I think nathan east is a good bass player, but the thing with the phrase “best bass player in the world” is that it was the phrase that the dude jaco used to describe himself, so it’s sort of a specific thing, but whatever do what you want…
