Originally aired in 1989 Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) enjoyed a 10 year long run on The Comedy Channel (now Comedy Central) and later on The Sci-Fi Channel until it finally ended in 1999.
The show follows Joel Hodgeson (and Mike Nelson in later seasons) who was shot into space by his mad scientist bosses and is being forced to watch bad “b” movies as part of the “mads” experiment. To keep him company Joel created four robots out of scrap parts around his spaceship, dubbed The Satellite of Love. Tom Servo, a robot that resembles a gumball machine; Crow T Robot, a gold robot with a bowling pin for a mouth; Gypsy, the ship’s large, purple, mother-figure and Cambot, a rarely-seen bot, mainly because he’s the one filming the goings-on in the SOL .
Joel(or Mike), Servo and Crow enter the movie theater and are seen as silhouettes at the bottom of the screen heckling an entire bad movie, leaving the theater occasionally for comedic host segments and commercial breaks.
The show has one of the most rabid cult followings in TV history, invoking many write-in campaigns and full-page ads taken out by fans in variety pleading to bring the show back.
