Scientist Adam Kane was a pioneer of genetic research who joined Genomex in the year 1978. He manipulated the DNA of humans to save their lifes. Unfortunately the genes of some of them unexpectedly started to mutate and they developed superhuman abilities.
After he realized that his research had been done for the wrong reason (for the goverment) and that a man named Mason Eckhart copied his work, Adam left Genomex and created a team with four of the most powerful mutants to save and protect a world that does not even know that mutants exist.
At first joined a woman named Lexa Pierce but she quickly found out that she is no team player so she left. Then Adam had to decide between two ferals, Shalimar Fox which he found on the street and Nikki Rogers. He chose Shalimar and placed Nikki in a foster home.
The next one to join the team was the good-natured computer genius Jesse Kilmartin, a molecular with the ability to alter the denisty of his body. Jesse and Shalimar developed soon as brother-sister relationship.
A few month later the last two members joined the team. The street guy and thief Brennan Mulwray (elemental) and the psionic Emma DeLauro who refused at first to admit that she is a mutant.
Together they fought against Mason Eckhart who usedmutants for his own bad plans or placed them into stasis pods. They also helped other mutants to find a safe place in the underground so they could live without the fear that Mason Eckhart with his GSA would find them and abuse them.
Later on another danger came up in the evil mutant Gabriel Ashlocke who wanted to rule the world and his team called The Strand. Gabriel Ashlocke was the very first mutant and the only one who had all four mutant types. Because of the very unstabile structure of his genes, Gabriel Ashlocke died in an explosion.
Since all mutants got this unstabile structure Adam conducted a lot of experiments on his team members to find a cure for them. After their powers increased because of new mutations of their genes he knew the time was running out. Adam found the exact death date of each mutant so he knew how much time was left. It came out later on that his experiments where successful on Jesse as he outlived his death date.
Despite the fact that Mason Eckhart got placed into a stasis pod by Gabriel Ashlocke, the man with the fake skin and the white wig returned. He decided to work together with Shalimar's father who ran the firm Naxcon. As Shalimars father realized the evil plans of Eckhart he caused the self distruction of the building. In the following explosion Emma died :) and Adam dissapeared.
It was at that time Lexa Pierce returned to the team, ordered by an organization with the name Dominion. Shalimar and Brennan didn't like Lexa but worked with her to find Adam. Mason Eckhart fooled them, claiming he knew where Adam is and would give him back if the team finds the cure for him since his immune system got destroyed by an accident. The team did what he said and was told that Adam is dead. Not much later Brennan killed Mason once and for all.
During the next year it came out that Adam wasn't dead. He at first showed up just as voice to give Shalimar a hint. He later showed himself to the team one by one, but just as hologram. As Lexa's life was in danger he returned to Sanctuary to help her but didn't stay. He warned them that the Dominion is a danger to all mutants and that the team shouldn't trust them.
As the Dominion found out that Jesse is stabile, they wanted to have him as lab rat to find out how to stabelize other mutants. So they ordered Lexa to deliver him which she refused since she had fallen in love with Jesse (which was a mutual love). Lexa got caputered and the dominion tried to force her to give out the codes to Sanctuary. She refused at first but as she saw that the Dominion had captured Jesse and trotured him, she gave them the code. But it was a fake one. The Domionion attacked Sanctuary and Brennan caused the explosion of their home.
With the help of Adam who had returned after they found him because he didn't want to leave Jesse alone, the team found the headquarters of the Dominion. Before they went inside Adam manipulated the Double Helix. Inside, on the search for Lexa and Jesse, they found out that the both were already free. But Lexa didn't want to leave the building yet. She wanted to know who is the mysterious leader of the team, known as the creator who allegedly lived since the 18 century.
It was a huge shock to everyone as they found out that the creator was no one other than Adam and that the Adam they knew he was just a clone, raised by loyal members of the Dominion. The creator and his community captured Adam and wanted to kill the team but Adam let the Helix explode and the explosion destroyed the headquarter.
Jesse, Lexa, Brennan and Shalimar could escape but they didn't know where to go since Sanctuary was destroyed, the Helix was destroyed and Adam disappeared. Not knowing what the future will bring and if they would find out if Brennan and Shalimar also were stabile or not or if they could save the unstabile Lexa, the team dissapread in the hope to find Adam and a cure.
