Maurice Robert "Mike" Gravel is a former Democratic United States Senator from Alaska, who served two terms from 1969 to 1981, and is a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2008 presidential election.
As Senator, Gravel became nationally known for his forceful attempts to end the draft during the Vietnam War and for having put the Pentagon Papers into the public record in 1971 despite risk to himself.
"It's like going into the Senate. You know, the first time you get there, you're all excited, 'My God, how did I ever get here?' Then, about six months later, you say, 'How the hell did the rest of them get here?'" -Mike Gravel

Mike Gravel was the individual who truly inspired me to pay more attention to politics – and in the beginning, I fully believed in the passion of the American public and the ideal of independence. Apparently, however, that means everything but independence of thought – if people paid attention, Mike Gravel would have received the Democratic nomination, rather than a complete and utter lockout from the media. This is tragic.
