I usually don't get angry about the depiction of Asians in movies since I'm so used to us getting the short end of the stick. I enjoyed Joy Luck Club with its host of problems and Crash even though LA is crawling with Asians and they only had a nearly comical human trafficking plot with Korean immigrants being released into Chinatown or something weird like that. But...
I will admit that I haven't finished the movie or the book. But I've seen enough of both and heard enough from friends (both Japanese and American) that have and the media to never want to do either.
Even the book is offensive. I wouldn't complain that it was written by a white man if he didn't try so hard to capitalize on westerners' Asian fetish. And that's how the geisha he based his book on felt. I was insulted enough then they went ahead and hired Chinese actresses for the main parts and filmed a big portion of it in San Francisco. Well, many people have problems telling us apart and Americans and Europeans are always faking each other's accents. So I could get over that if there wasn't so much wrong with this movie.
Even though the main actresses were Chinese and the book was better, it still ranks high in my list of favorite movies. It's visually beautiful and I got a glimpse of another person's life in a different era so to speak. So I love it!

the movie is nice, but not so good as the book.
