Lionel Hutz was perhaps the greatest Simpsons character ever. He was so unabashedly sleazy when doing things as voicing over Aunt Gladys’ video will or handing a judge a phony verdict (“This verdict still says guilty! And ‘guilty’ is spelled wrong!”) that he was impossible not to love.
While Hutz’s character was written brilliantly, it was the late, great Phil Hartman’s voice work that made him something special.
While I understand and support the decision to retire the characters in speaking roles of Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure (they still pop up in crowd shots every now and then) after Hartman’s death, I do miss them very much.
Lionel Hutz…truly one of the greatest law-talking guys ever.
