Light Yagami (夜神 月, Yagami Raito) is the protagonist and anti-hero of Death Note. At the start of the series, he discovers the Death Note and uses it to kill criminals, becoming known to the people of Japan as Kira (based on the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "killer"). He is characterized as an extremely intelligent, but bored young man, who is frustrated by the lack of justice in the world. He is confident of his own intelligence and how smart he is in relation to others. Being a genius, Light feels that only he is fit to judge humanity and steer it on a proper moral course, viewing himself as the "god" of the new world he is creating.
He is voiced by Mamoru Miyano in the Japanese anime and by Brad Swaile in the English dub. In the live-action film, he is played by Tatsuya Fujiwara.

pshhh..I hate it when at first he's going around killing criminals, and then goes off and kills everyone. I guess the whole manga raises a question; should criminals sit in jail for the rest of their life, like a caged bird?; or be better off dead?

Light is just the most perfect misguided, amoral asshole who's too clever for his own good.
I do wish they played out the Light vs. L (and maybe Misa) angle more. I just love how Light gets his though.

L is really the better man in Deathnote, no kidding. Raito uses Misa every way he can, but L is more...sincere in approach (I like the Misa kiss L part, it's really cute). Raito is good looking but not the kind u'd want as a trusted friend, he's just too manipulative, too much fooling around with woman, and way too cruel and calculative and sinister.
a pity L died....
But anyhow, even for a bad guy, when Raito dies it is horrible to watch..........sigh*~~~~~
Yer but Light is still really hot, I think the whole idea behind the plot is no matter how a person looks on the outside they canbe compleatly different on the inside. I also think its strange how Light as a son of a police cheif could have such a twisted sense of right and wrong.

I hated the ending to this great Anime,They should have continued the series by have Light have his follower wright all there names including his own in the fake so all suspicion of him being Kira would be droped.

He was the best character ever, until the end. I hated it when he went mad. It was worse, far worse, than seeing him die (except in the manga- at least in the anime they gave him some closure, and the film was so, so sweet).

I liked this character a lot. In the end, I think that he got what he wanted, which was to become a god since in the last episode of the manga you see thousands of followers holding a ceremony for "kira" and a girl says "lord kira" which means that he did become a "god" even though he died. I also liked how L was standing next to his body when he died. Misa's suicide also went well with the story since she wouldnt live in a world without light. Death Note is great overall. The only thing i hated was Near, my gosh

I just hate how much of a dumbass Near was, and yet he still won. Its literally the saddest ending possible.. no idealized world, Mello, who did most of the work for Near, died, and Kiyomi died despite devoting herself to Kira.
Also Ryuzaki deserved to catch Kira in the first place, but got cheated, and if he had a ridiculous amount of innocent people would have been spared.
