Every time I see "Five items or less" in the supermarket I feel like shouting "It's Fewer! Fewer, I tell you! "
Less work, less responsibility, less sugar (singular)
Fewer boxes, fewer people, fewer purchases (plural)
Could it be simpler?

Fewer and fewer people use “fewer” nowadays! It makes my blood boil to see people use “less” when it should be “fewer.”

FEWER refers to countable QUANTITIES on the other hand LESS refers to smaller QUANTITIES. so the signs speak to itself!!!!
