"Layla," from the Derek and the Dominos album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, was written by Eric Clapton for and about George Harrison's then-wife Pattie Boyd. Clapton was a good friend of Harrison's, but, unfortunately, also took a bit of a fancy to his wife when she came to him during times of marital trouble. Clapton had recently been given a copy of the Arabic story The Story of Layla, about a princess who was married off to a man other than the one who desperately loved her, resulting in the spurned lover's madness. This sounded vaguely familiar to him, and from this inspiration the first three minutes of "Layla" were born. Later he heard a piano piece written by Jim Gordon, another member of the band, and had that put into the song, comprising the main content of the last four minutes.
