Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919) was an American author, actor, and independent filmmaker best known as the creator, along with illustrator W. W. Denslow, of one of the most popular books ever written in American children’s literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, better known today as simply The Wizard of Oz. He wrote thirteen sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a plethora of other works, and made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen.
This man doesn't get nearly enough credit, what with all the CS Lewis and JK Rowling hype. He came 50 and 100 years prior to both respectively and is the first American fairy tale writer, creating the wonderful Oz series, and all the colorful characters within.

I wouldn't put him in the top rank, but you're quite right, AJMcFly. I've read The Wizard of Oz and it's much better than the film.
Having said that, the film's pretty good too - on its own terms.
I enjoy the Wizard of Oz, but its sequels, especially Marvelous Land and Ozma of Oz, are far superior. I am a far greater fan of the series itself than the first book.
Alas, I know them only by reputation. Maybe one day I'll get around to them.
Yes the series is great to read! If you haven't read anyof the other books you are missing out! :-)
The original 14 Oz books by L. Frank Baum are the most essential books a child can read. Childhood is not complete without these glorious adventures!
