Iron Maiden are an English heavy band from Leyton, East London, England, formed in 1975. The band are led by founder, bassist and songwriter Steve Harris. Since forming in 1975 they have released fourteen studio albums, nine live albums, four EPs and eight compilations.
As a pioneer of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, Iron Maiden rose to fame in the early 1980s, and after several lineup changes, they went on to release a string of platinum and gold albums. These include the US platinum-selling landmark The Number of the Beast in 1982 and the follow up Piece of Mind in 1983, and Powerslave in 1984. Iron Maiden released their newest studio effort in 2006 entitled A Matter of Life and Death, which peaked at number nine on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in the UK.
As one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time, Iron Maiden have sold more than 70 million albums worldwide, without significant mainstream or radio support. The band won the Ivor Novello Awards for international achievement in 2002, and were also inducted into the Hollywood RockWalk in Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California during their tour in the United States in 2005. Their influences include: Thin Lizzy, UFO, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Wishbone Ash.

I completely agree.
I find it so hilarious that this band was the target of so many parents groups in the ‘80s for being satanic. They’re a bunch of nerds, people! They write songs based on novels by Frank Herbert and Orson Scott Card!

Iron Maiden is a band of true musical geniuses. The Adrian Smith/Dave Murray combination cannot be topped by any band as far as guitar. Steve Harris is arguably the greatest bass player of all time. As a guitarist I can appreciate how fuckin sick their music is. No other metal band comes close. Metallica is just a poor imitation of Maiden. You can hear it in their music. Metallica wouldn't exist if it weren't for Maiden. Metallica is just a bunch of shredders and an arrogant drummer who overplays and sounds robotic. They don't have the depth of Maiden or the talent.
hey, powerslave83, go fuck yourself with a rusty corkscrew. Metallica is anything but an imitation of Iron Maiden. The two couldn't be any more differant if they tried. Iron Maiden isn't heavy metal. They're too refined to be called heavy. meanwhile Metallica is bluntly thrash with little variance in most cases and i've yet to find a thrash band that isn't heavy metal. It's an insult to both bands when their fans bicker like this. the members of each band respect each other.
Clever Sleazoid, their older albums are definetly heavy metal though. It's hard to group their newer stuff into more in depth genres but it's generally heavy metal.

iron maiden actually have sold 100 million copies! along with metallica, they are the 2 most successfull bands! maiden though are by far a better band! they have brilliant musicians! dickinson is the greatest vocalist, harris the best bass guitarist, smith and murray are in the top 10 of guitarists, gers in the top 25 and mcbrain is in the top 5 of the drummers! harris and mcbrain also create the best rythm twin!
