In 1985 New York art-fartsters Sonic Youth released a cover version of “Into The Groove” in their own inimitable scuzz-rock style.
What made it particularly thrilling however, and what it made it stand out from a trillion and one other arch, knowing indie covers of pop records was their brilliant decision to sample the Madonna original and drop disembodied chunks of her voice deep into their recording.
The moment of genius in this “tribute” lay in the way that they stole the words “Now I Know You’re Mine” from Madge’s lips and transformed them from something vaguely alluring into something sinister and predatory.
