It is an absolutely stonking first line. It was, in fact, the reason I read the book - my parents have a toilet book that contains just loads of first lines from books, and while visiting one day I read this line.
However, unlike seemingly the rest of the world I found the remainder of 'Catcher...' to be overated drivvle.
