I once went out with a girl who couldn't (literally couldn't) drink a cup of tea unless it still had a teaspoon sticking out of it. It endeared her to me even more! It really is the little things, huh?

Haha, my mother does that! :) But yes, I love it when people have little quirks like that and I think I probably have plenty of them myself.

Idiosyncrasies! Little individual traits that define you! The way you do something differently to other people – a characteristic, really, but specific and peculiar. (For want of a better word.)

haha I have them, but I never know that I do until people point them out to me :)

I have a special order for eating my fruit flavoured gummies ... it's quite complex ...

Finrod
Finrod posted about 1 year ago
I can understand that. I have to use older coins in preference to newer. And if I use banknotes, they all have to be the right way round. Cashpoints (? automatic tellers in the US ?) are so irritating in that respect!
dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted about 1 year ago

I only eat stuff in even numbers, like I'll eat 8 mms but not 9. And I have to have a straw to drink soda out of a can….

Kittilyn
Kittilyn posted about 1 year ago

Really?  I like to eat in round numbers.  I like to do pretty much everything in round numbers ...

As for my gummies ... Never before shown to the world ... is my SECRET METHOD!

1.  Sort said gummies by colour and shape, if possible.

2.  EAT ALL DOUBLES in reverse rainbow order.

3.  Organize the remaining gummies into a type of graph ... For example, all the colours in different columns; all the shapes in different rows.

4.  Eat all of them, one shape at a time, in reverse rainbow order.  Example, EAT ALL THE PTYRADACTALS.  THE PURPLE ONES DIE FIRST.

5.  Finally, you will be left with one shape in every colour.  Eat them in reverse rainbow order, beginning with purple, and ending with red.

I realize this may be more OCD than an idiosyncrasy, but it's what I do.

“Idiosyncrasy,” along with “iambic,” happens to be one of my favorite words, so I had to best this. =)

Some of mine…I insist on spelling “cancelled” with two L’s even though I’m American; I have a very specific order with my bed pillows (firm on the right so I can prop it up near my table lamp, squishy on the left); I always run up stairs on my tiptoes; I always loop my lowercase Ys and Gs while writing…oh, I have way too many. =/

Oh, and Finrod, we call those ATMs Stateside.

Finrod
Finrod posted about 1 year ago

ATMs! Thanks, iyp. I was too idle to check that.

I never write a letter 'r' the way it's taught in handwriting.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted about 1 year ago

round numbers?

uumm I make math/number patterns when im in places like the grocery, or target, or just driving on the highway. Oh i remeber one that a lot of people hate about me, the only change I use is quarters if i get pennie or nickles or dimes I leave it on a counter or throw it in a pond or I leave a penny heads up so a little kid can find it and have good luck

gbman
gbman posted about 1 year ago
I, like Finrod,  also have to make sure that my bills are all facing the same way, I also have to put them in order by denomination (small bills toawrds the front, larger bills towards the back) so that my wallet is like a little cash drawer (tills in the U.K.?). Whenever I am eating, I always take one bite/forkful of each food on my plate so that by the time I'm done I have one bite left of each (one piece of steak, one forkfull of mashed potatoes, one bite of a roll). I never knew I did that until it was pointed out to me.

dumdbrunette, i'm exactly the same with numbers.

If i'm changing the volume of something I always make it an even number. Odd numbers, as their name suggests are just...odd.

Finrod
Finrod posted about 1 year ago
Yes, gb, we call them tills. I'm the opposite way round with small change from db; I can't understand why anyone would throw away money. I remember a story about a millionaire who stopped in the street to pick up a coin; when his companion looked at him in disbelief, he explained: "Anyone who grew up in the Great Depression knows the value of a nickel."
dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted about 1 year ago

Exactly richardAM, odd numbers are indeed odd. Its not like I throw it in a garbage, I just know that I wont use it so I leave it somewhere where someone like tht millionaire in your story can pick it up ( I prefer it to be kid because I always remember picking up change when I was a kid and thinking I was rich, funny now that I dislike it greatly) o btw I've heard that saying before, about the worth of a nickle in the great depression but now adays a nickle doesnt get you anywhere, I mean 20 of them together barely gets you anywhere

Finrod
Finrod posted about 1 year ago
My point is how he became a millionaire. There is another expression: every little helps. And money is money, no matter what denomination. But let's not get bogged down in this.
dumbbrunette

True Cool
MastaKink
MastaKink posted about 1 year ago

Man, if I had a nickel for everytime i've heard that millionaire story… oh wait, I have, and each time I threw the nickel away…

I don't really have any special methods to eat my food, no eating by numbers or anything like that... sometimes I eat the good things first and sometimes I save the best for last. gbman and I share the same 'way of the wallet' if you will. Volume is a big thing, it must be on an even # or on a specific bar wether it's the car stereo, home stereo, TV... Alot of this stuff I just consider OCD...

and when I eat my smarties, I eat the red ones - ah nevermind!
dumbbrunette

Good point most idosyncrasies are just cute acts of OCD

Finrod
Finrod posted about 1 year ago

No; OCD – which cannot in any way be described as cute – can be crippling, whereas an idiosyncrasy is no more than a trait or habit.

Kittilyn
Kittilyn posted about 1 year ago

Surprised  Very true, Finrod.  I saw a television special on OCD once ... and I realize TV is no place to get your information from, but the girl they were profiling once got stuck on her driveway, unable to get to the front door.  All because she was mortified of stepping on a crack, in her cobbled driveway.  That's when she realized she had OCD, when she had to wait until her mother came home until she could get inside.

And yes, crippling.

MastaKink
MastaKink posted about 1 year ago

True, OCD has been obsorbed by mainstream culture and watered down to describe a persons meticulous nature or anal behaviour, but can't habits or rituals be considered a mild form of compulsion?

Kittilyn
Kittilyn posted about 1 year ago

Yes, I suppose.  But there is a difference between being mildly compulsive (as in liking things neat / harmless rituals)  and having to pull over your car every time you go a single kilometre over the speed limit and say a prayer before you can continue ... which makes you late for work.

Good point though, about OCD being watered down ...

MastaKink
MastaKink posted about 1 year ago

Right. My compulsions (or habits) are very mild, they rarely stop me from living my life, although I have to live alone because god forbid if anybody moves my shit around... bad news. I'm just a very neat guy and if things in my life get out of order then it does have an effect on my mental state, and then other parts of my life suffer, my mind gets clouded and I find it difficult to concentrate or have clear thoughts.

Feel like I should be lying on a couch for this... you guys will just send me a bill right...??

I have this strange fasination with odd numbers.

Probably a few other quirks that I'm not aware of.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted about 1 year ago

True, ODC is watered down. But I always thought that OCD had different degrees and some idiosyncrasies were just at the bottom of the OCD chain. Like the routine that kittilyn has to go through to eat gummies or that gbman and finrod have to have their money in a certain order

gbman
gbman posted about 1 year ago

Idiosyncrasies are a watered down form of OCD, but they are not crippling, it's just the way some people do things. I knew a girl who had to have her pens on her desk arranged vertically, evenly spaced; and her tape dispenser and stapler horizontally at the front of her desk, all neat and tidy. I thought it would be fun to switch things around, bad idea, she became very agitated with my antics, so much so, that she had to put everything back the way it was before she was able to function again. At the time I never knew what OCD was, but that's what it was. It was still funny to me, I never did it again because I feared being stabbed with one of those pens.

inyourpanorama

Hey, there are idiosyncrasies that have nothing to do with OCD or putting things in a specific order. Idiosyncrasies are just quirks, really.

Like my attraction to Ric Ocasek. That’s certainly idiosyncratic, but not obsessive-compulsive in the slightest.

I like eating sharp cheese with dark chocolate. Yes, at the same time.

I hate touching metal, because it makes your hands smell and that for some reason freaks me out, it's like an invisible layer of germs that you can't see, but you can smell.... GROSS!  LOL That is wierd now that I read it back to myself.Cool
MastaKink

I had a g/f that would absolutely hate the sound and feeling of silverware touching her teeth, or anyones teeth for that matter. It would drive her nuts and send shivers up her spine. So of course, being me,  I pushed it as far as I could… wonder why we never lasted… Hmmm…

dumbbrunette

O god I hate it when people bite down on their spoons and I can hear the metal against their teeth  eeeewwww
