I’m going for this on the basis of the score he wrote for the Lord of the Rings, which in a couple of places (the Mines of Moria, the sequence where the beacons summon aid to Gondor) is simply stunning. John Williams comes a close second – but (once you notice it, anyway) he has an irksome habit of sounding like imitation Prokofiev
