Homer (Greek: Ὅμηρος, Hómēros) was an early Greek poet and aoidos (rhapsode) traditionally credited with the composition of the Iliad and the Odyssey. The poems are often dated to the 8th or 7th century BC; whether Homer himself was the actual composer of his works, or whether he was largely indebted to oral transmission, is debated by scholars. Homer’s works begin the Western Canon and are universally praised as brilliant and influential. By convention, their composition is also often taken to initiate the period of Classical Antiquity.
