Well, all you Sushi, Miso and Ramen lovers, heres a feast for your imagination. Murakami pins down those points where the everday and the fantastic collide – consequently using them to launch into virtually unputdownable philosophical, emotional and metaphysical adventures – like no other author. Well perhaps he doesn’t have much competition. It’s a very specialised discipline. But add in some exotic Japanese locales and a sense of pop culture to rival Kerouac and Hunter S, odds are you’ll soon be wishing there were a few more like him.
For those seeking blown minds I recommend: ‘The wild sheep chase’ or ‘The Hard boiled wonderland at the end of the world.’
If you want to ease in try the best selling (in Japan) Norwegian wood. Yes, like the song.

I was given The Wind-up Bird Chronicle in my early teens and it’s remained a favourite of mine.
If you’re a Murakami novice I would agree that Norwgian Wood is an excellent place to start.
It took me two years to get through Wind-Up Bird. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and Kafka On the Shore went much faster, and Norwegian Wood is a breeze by comparison.
I have only read The Elephant Vanishes (I prefer short stories to novels), but it was excellent.
Tony Takitani is the BEST !
Have you seen the Tony Takitani film?
Haruki Murakami is really cool author. I really love him books! _
Norwegian Wood is not very surreal…start with the short story "The Elephant Vanishes", then move on to "Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" or "Hard-Boiled Wonderland"
Hard Boiled Wonderland is my favorite though I really liked After Dark too
I ADORE HIM!!!
Kafka on the shore and Hard boiled Wonderland!! <3
