why do all girls in anime have to be cheerful? Thats so old-fashioned and lame. There are many different types of girls, but animes seem to only think that cheerful childhood friends should only get the guy.Ai is interesting. What is Ran's purpose in DC? To cry over Shinichi? she's useless! Thats the worst-developed character in the show! Her personality can slide, but she's pointless! Shinichi should get a reality check on how sensitive and clingy she is when they are NOT EVEN DATING! They have NO CHEMISTRY. No, really Ran would be nothing without Shinichi, you're right, because without him, SHE"D HAVE NO POINT! Haibara can get her own manga, thats how USEFUL to the story she is! Haibara lives 4EVA!

I think I  Ai is the best because she has the most spending time with Conan/Shinichi. Well, About Ran she is pretty,kind etc.but when i watch the "AixConan Pictures of you" Movie in the Youtube you"ll see there that Ai Haibara/Shiho Miyano and Conan Edogawa/Shinichi Kudou love each other.I have 8 CDs of Detective Conan,When I watch it I saw that they really love and like each other it's just I can't explain the feeling that the fact they like and love each other.That's why i think that the best is Ai but Ran is just one point to reach Ai.

For all the Ai-haters out there: Fine, you people go ahead and see the anime without Ai-chan, then no one would make the antidote and Ran would never see Shinichi again!! And don't say that it's Ai-chan's fault that Kudo is Conan, because his own stupid carelessness got him into this.

And how many people can work hard making the anidote when finishing it would mean the one you love leaving to be with someone else? And FYI, Ai saved Ran's ass loads of times!!

 Ai is couragous, cool, witty, unique, and other endless qualities. She's not just your typical girl manga character. And she is one of the few people Conan confides almost everything to, one of the only people Shinichi can match wits with. I believe that in the end, Gosho will still pair Shinichi with Ran, but Miyano Shiho is his soulmate. If they had met sooner then they would have ended up together, and would probably be happier.

Personally, I think Haibara and Conan’s relationship is more interesting (it is even now, though there’s no romance between them). True Ai is kind of mean, cold, sarcastic, not exactly a goodey two shoes and such. Those are her flaws, each character needs some of these to make them unique in their own way. She has her strengths as well and her flaws and strengths balance it out. Most can already point out Haiabara’s flaws easily, which is a reassurance that she’s not just some good guy that will fight for justice all the time. She has her fears Vermouth, Gin. It’s also proven to be a major cripple since it shows her reluctance to follow Conan/Shinichi with the BO is involved. Haibara can be disliked for her flaws, but it gives her depth, development, something that makes her interesting.

Ran is the polar opposite of Haibara, she’s nice, polite, warm to others. As I said the opposite of Ai. Those alone are stereotypical traits for the romantic interests for the male protagonist (not to mention that she’s his childhood friend, which has been used over and over again by all sorts of stories. No offense to the creator or anything, but he uses that concept way too much to the point where it becomes redundant. Kazuha and Heji, Kaito, and Aoko, Eri and Kogoro (if you count that). That’s three in total four if you add Ran and Shinichi) Ran’s flaws are well for me none really comes to mind. No major ones or obvious ones. She’s just kept in the dark. She virtually has never been really scared. I mean she’s afraid at points, but it never stops her from doing whatever she’s about to do. She saves Vermouth too, despite the fact that the latter was going to kill the former. No animosity towards the person that was going to kill you? Kind of a Sue trait. If Ai were in her place, she’d probably let Vermouth just die. Something more realistic. Someone said that Ran was loyal, pretty, sweet and etc, but… that’s what everyone wants to be. It’s good to be like that in the real world, but let’s say if everyone was like that in the story. What’s the point?

Both have importance in the story and an important relationship with Conan/Shinichi (which is probably why the three of them are together in some of the openings). Haibara has a major role since she knows about the BO and she made APTX 4869. Along with this she serves as someone that actually understands Conan/Shinichi’s predicament. Ran is harder to categorize. Aside from being the main character’s romantic interest, she doesn’t do much that concerns the conflicts with the BO. She just kind of waits. Honestly how long can you wait? Around 500 episodes (I lost count) that’d be longer than a year and she’s still waiting. Not realistic and honestly just… another Sue trait.

Ideally Ran and Shinichi would be more of a ‘happy’ couple since well…. best friends, known each for years, super close… but that’s not how it works in real life most of the time. A boy doesn’t grow up with a girl all the way until high school and then marries her. To me it seems well quite dull, expected, uncreative and bland.

Haibara and Conan’s relationship is harder to describe in words and a lot more complex, which makes it more interesting. They know each other better actually since Ran has no idea what’s going on. Haibara has a LOT of flaws, but they’ make her seem like a real person. People like Ran exist, but it’s just boring, isn’t as probable, and in stories these type of people can’t do much can they? You need complex characters to have a plot. Villains, anti heroes, the asshole in a story. They all provide conflicts, movements in plot, they support the plot in general.

Most would consider me mean for saying this, but based on my observations, Ran isn’t really needed in the story itself. If you remove her Shinichi doesn’t really have a romantic interest until Haibara comes along. The only significant thing that Ran does is save Haibara in episode 345. I read a comment somewhere that if Ran wasn’t there Haibara might have died. Akai was there, so Ran’s absence wouldn’t exactly lead Haibara to her death.

If you take out Haibara well…. the story would be quite meaningless. No cure, not enough information on the BO. The most that could happen would be Conan defeating the BO, but then that’s the end since no one can make the cure.

Everyone is entitled their own opinion. This is mine, and I’m just stating my reasoning. Also Aquagirl520 (if you’re the writer on FF.net, you’re awesome) stated that Haibara making the antidote would force her to give up Conan. That’s true…. if someone makes such a noble sacrifice despite his/her’s shady background doesn’t that give them some credit?

It kind of sounds like I’m bashing Ran and calling her a Sue all the time. To be honest, I don’t really like her character concept. She’s a likeable person in real life, but this is just a story and a person like this in a story just doesn’t offer much. In the end Shinichi will probably be paired with Ran (unless of course the latter dies), but it’s cliched as hell. A relationship of two close friends compared to one with a good guy and a person that used to be on the other side. I think the latter is better. Haiabara is considered an I quote ‘uncool character’ because she’s mean, cold, but that’s what makes her a deeper character. She’s starting to change too if you haven’t noticed. Ai is opening up to others. Ran is still the same: gets mad at Shinichi, loves him secretly, waits for him forever.

Anyway after a long rambling yeah… I just wanted to give some concrete reasons why I think Haibara is a better character than Ran, and no offense to some people, but typing in caps lock, ranting without any clear purpose, defending a character that doesn’t exist without stating a clear reason, making false accusations, and doing the point scoreboard makes the writer seem immature.
